Breaking: Bob Melvin Extended for Two Years

by JohnBowen

As reported by, Bob Melvin has been extended by Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s through the 2016 season.

Melvin took over the club mid-way through 2011, when the team was struggling amidst after Beane had brought in a number of players on short-term deals to compete for a division title.

The very next year – when many predicted the A’s to lose 100 games – Melvin skippered his ballclub to a 94-68 record and their first division title since 2006.

Prior to managing the Athletics, Melvin managed the Diamondbacks and led them to the 2007 ALCS despite a negative run differential.

John goes through the effort of writing something, and the least we can do is give it one response.

Even if it’s a meaningless one like mine.

I could have sworn Melvin coached the Brewers. Anyone think the Athletics and win 90 games in 2013?

  2. John Says:

    Lol it’s cool.

Doug Melvin has been the GM of the Brewers since 2002.

  4. Raul Says:

Full season of Trout, Pujols, Hamilton…I don’t think Oakland wins 90 either.

But I do think Oakland is set up to have a good rotation for a while.

  5. Raul Says:

Ah, so I confused Doug Melvin and Bob Melvin.

  6. Raul Says:

Buster Olney ranked the top 10 bullpens of all time.
Not that he’s qualified to do so, but anyway…

    1. 1998 Yankees
    2. 1990 Reds
    3. 2003 Astros
    4. 2003 Dodgers
    5. 1990 Athletics
    6. 1972 Athletics
    7. 2002 Angels
    8. 2010 Giants
    9. 2012 Rays
    10. 2002 Braves

Like everything else with Buster Olney and ESPN, they completely ignore baseball before 1990…because apparently, it did not exist.

  7. John Says:

Well…bullpens didn’t really exist the way they do now. Dodn’t the 1970’s Dodgers have some sick pens though?

  8. Chuck Says:

The addition of Houston will give a few “free” wins to the other West teams, but on the other side LA is much improved and so is Seattle.

Too early to predict anything standings wise though.

“Not that he’s qualified to do so, but anyway…”

    …why mention it?

    Depressed over the Rangers?

  10. Raul Says:

    That Rangers game was brutal.
Stu Bickel is terrible and Lundqvist looks rusty.

  11. Raul Says:

I like hockey, but I need some baseball.
I need baseball the way Bruce Dickinson needs cowbell.

  12. Chuck Says:

Coyotes lost their home opener too..6-4 to Chicago..scored on their first shift and that was it.
